I’m writing a mixed methods systematic review, and I was about to start my write up when I realised the majority of my papers are cross sectional studies. I know that this isn’t technically primary data. Would this invalidate my dissertation.
Relevant answer
Answer
Having a majority of cross-sectional studies in your mixed methods systematic review does not necessarily invalidate your dissertation. Cross-sectional studies, while not technically primary data in the sense of data collected specifically for your research, are still valuable sources of information in systematic reviews.
In a mixed methods systematic review, you aim to synthesize evidence from various types of studies, such as qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research, to address your research questions comprehensively. While primary data collection is one aspect of mixed methods research, the synthesis of existing data from published studies is another valid approach.
Cross-sectional studies can provide valuable insights into the prevalence, distribution, and associations of variables of interest at a specific point in time. They can contribute to the overall understanding of a research topic and help identify patterns or trends that may inform future research or practice.

In some of the Phd dissertations, I see randomized controlled mixed methods study is conducted applying only feasibility phase with 3-5 participants as a pilot trial. Then the main study is started. Is this method ok? I think they should conduct a pilot trial first which includes feasibility and represents main study including randomized controlled trial design. For example 30 intervention and 30 control groups. How a new developed health education program could be designed best ? Which of the quidelines should be followed ?

I am seeking an advisor and a place to defend my dissertation in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence application. I already have a significant amount of material, including publications and developed machine learning tools that are successfully implemented and used in companies. I would like to defend my dissertation specifically based on these developed projects. Please share advice or recommendations regarding finding an advisor and a university that could support me in this endeavor.
Thank you for your attention and assistance!
Relevant answer
Answer
As far as I know, all institutions require listening some lectures. Lithuania is nice place to defend thesis as you can do it in a form of articles, making it much easier if you are writing articles from that field. However, you still need to obtain some credits from lectures and I don't think you can avoid that. As for Machine Learning (ML), if it's just ML you might want to look at Informatics field, if it has some mathematical or physical applications you might be able to get a degree from those. I'm working on a similar dissertation myself.

Dr. Gunbas, my name is Stephen A. Peterson. I am a doctoral student in Psychology attending Northcentral University. I am in my second year as a doctoral student in Psychology from Biological Anthropology with a B.A. and M.S. from Indiana University--Bloomington. I will have roughly two more years before I begin my dissertation.
Dr. Gunbas, your article "Teaching and Learning Developmental Psychology in the frame of Anchored Instruction" (2022) is intriguing to me! I wish to use your model and test the anchored instruction method using more participants as you recommended in your conclusion and limitation section. I also gained possession of another article by Madeleine Pownall et.al.,(2022). "Does 'Psychological Literacy' Feature in Non-Psychology Degrees? A cross-discipline study of student perceptions". Both you and Dr. Pownall present interesting work I would like to look at and maybe replicate. Dr. Pownall works in the United Kingdom. Thank you for your consideration!

I am currently doing my dissertation with the following variables
IDV : Prejudice
DV : Team Cohesiveness
W : Ethical Climate
So I got the result as a significant moderation but the conditional effects and the graph is confusing to interpret.
Relevant answer
Answer
Can you elaborate WHAT exaclty is confusing? It seems pretty straight forward that with increasing values for W, the effect of X becomes more negative. (And I would recommend using 16, 50, and 84 percentiles instead of SD, it makes it more wasy, prevents predictions for values which are not in the scale anymore (which might happen, if the predictor is skewed) and in case of normality of the predictor [which is not a necessary condition in any way!!] both approaches will lead to the same conclusion)
Maybe as a help to undestand what is going on, you should rearrange the regression formula. Without intercept it is basically:
b1*X + b2*W + b3*X*W
To see how the interaction affects the X variable:
(b1 + b3*W)*X + b2*W.
Now you see that the effect of X is conditional on the b3 weight AND the value of W. If you now take the values of your variables and the equation, you will get exactly the results
(-.262 + (-.028*-6.361)*X =
(-.262 + (0.178))*X = -0.083*X (rounding error)
(-.262 + (-.028*0)*X =
(-.262 + 0)*X = -.262*X
(-.262 + (-.028*6.361)*X
(-.262 + (-0.178))*X = -0.44*X
Hope this helps

About 20 years ago, I had a student working on #VABS (https://lnkd.in/gFe7kvEy) related research as his dissertation topic. He predicted then that in 10 years, nobody will use beam theories anymore. However, now 20 years passed, beam models are still used extensively in research and industry. Can anyone share some insights why beam models are still needed and used?
Relevant answer
Answer
I think one of the major reasons is its interpretability. Of course, we cannot talk about the advantages of beam theories without the benefit of fast computation/calculations. But I think in essence beam theories are mostly reducing the 3d structural latent space to 1D, and this enables easy understanding which enhances the explainability of what people are looking at. I thought that is one of the background that even people are still interested in beam theories, lots of research has moved towards designing with beam theories rather than improving the prediction level.

I'm currently writing my dissertation and have been exploring Critical Realism as a guiding metatheory. While delving into the concept of underlying mechanisms, a question has emerged: How can I ascertain that I've truly identified these mechanisms, and how do I ensure that my investigation is sufficiently profound?
Relevant answer
Answer
Well, that's an interesting question. I am not sure about critical realism being a "metatheory" (whatever that may be) or about research needing metatheories, for that matter. However, the problem of when (with what evidence) a mechanism is validly identified is one that I keep encountering in my own work.
We need to start from the definition of a mechanism, in my case of a social mechanism. I use the following: A social mechanism is "a sequence of causally linked events that occur repeatedly in reality if certain conditions are given and which link specified initial conditions to a specific outcome". (Gläser and Laudel 2019: [4], based on Mayntz 2004: 241). From this follows that I must empirically identify specific sequences of events that occur repeatedly in my empirical material, which are triggered by conditions that are similar across cases and lead to outcomes that are similar across cases.
If I manage this, I can argue that I have a candidate for a mechanism. It depends on the amount and solidity of empirical evidence for me to claim that this is indeed a mechanism. The crucial point is the word "repeatedly" in the definition. If I find a sequence occuring only once, I have a candidate for a mechanism at best. If I find it occurring two or three times, I would still call it a candidate mechanims. Above that, I would probably be inclined to call the sequence a mechanism. However, this depends on the totality of the empirical evidence available. And I would always state that further research need to confirm that what I found is indeed a mechanism.

Hi,
I am stuck in writing methodology for my dissertation,
My diss is about energy literacy and I would like to use mixed methods with survey and interview.
so my plan is surveying them to know general answers that i would like to get from quantitative, and will use t-test to compare it.
and I am gonna pick one of them from each group made by my hypothesis,
then interview them to know more specific answer from them in detail and I want to use structural equation modeling analysis for this qualitative methods.
is it okay to use different analysis for each different method?
Any help would be previously appreciated.
Relevant answer
Answer
What you need is a model. First, read a book or two on mixed methods. Creswell is a great place to start. Secondly, find dissertations in your program by others, so you know generally what your university expects. Thirdly, plan how your methodology will answer your research question, establishing delimitations upfront and forecasting limitations. The quantitative and qualitative methods will be different but complementary.

-National policy or directives.
Any ideas, comments or feedback is welcome
Relevant answer
Answer
As a social work professor myself, I find this topic to be interesting.
Now that you have chosen your topic, the next step is to decide how you would like to measure the impact of social work intervention in your study.
If you want to understand how social work intervention can help reduce re-offending then you will need two groups of respondents. One would be the experimental group and the other would be the control group. Members from group A (experimental group) would have received social work intervention while members from group B (control group) would not have received any social work intervention. You'll have to then compare the re-offending rates between the two groups after a certain period of time to understand whether the social work intervention has had any impact on the re-offending rates in group A when compared to group B.
Hope this is helpful.

Dear ResearchGate community, especially those working as journal editors and those involved in supervising and marking student dissertations at all level, what is the acceptable extent of artificial intelligence input in students' work? I am curious about the permissible boundaries and considerations when it comes to incorporating AI into academic projects. Your insights and experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
In my opinion it really doesn't matter if the student used AI for the dissertation. Punishing AI writing is meaningless since the future of human collaboration with AI is arriving.
Instead, the traditional methods of education and evaluation, should evolve with time. For example, certain skills like spelling and grammar are not significant anymore, as these can now be handled by AI. This indicates a need to shift the emphasis towards the higher-order cognitive abilities that AI is yet to replicate effectively: critical thinking, creativity, reasoning, communication, and more. For instance, instead of a written thesis assessment, maybe the assessment should become a development/research vlog or in-person demonstration, articulating their thought processes, demonstrating their collaborative skills with other people and AI and showcasing their ability to leverage AI in problem-solving.

Which dissertations, articles describe the selection of materials, products using quality by design and life cycle assessment? Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
Quality by Design (QbD) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) are two methodologies that can be used to improve the quality and sustainability of products and processes in various industries. Here are some examples of how these methodologies can be applied in practice and some resources that provide more information on the topic:
QbD can be used in the pharmaceutical industry to design and develop drug products that meet predefined quality attributes. The QbD approach involves identifying and controlling critical quality attributes (CQAs) throughout the product lifecycle, from development to manufacturing and distribution. Some resources on this topic include:
"Quality by Design for Biopharmaceuticals: Principles and Case Studies" by Anurag S. Rathore and Rohin Mhatre, which provides an overview of QbD concepts and case studies in the biopharmaceutical industry.
"Implementation of Quality by Design (QbD) in the Pharmaceutical Industry: A Systematic Review" by Naresh Kumar, which reviews the literature on QbD implementation in the pharmaceutical industry and identifies key success factors and challenges.
LCA can be used to evaluate the environmental impacts of products and processes throughout their entire lifecycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. LCA can help identify opportunities for improving the environmental performance of products and processes. Some resources on this topic include:
"Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment" by Mary Ann Curran, which provides an overview of LCA concepts and methodology.
"Life Cycle Assessment: Principles and Practice" by Michael Hauschild and Ralph Rosenbaum, which provides a comprehensive guide to LCA methodology and applications.
QbD and LCA can also be used together to design and develop sustainable products and processes that meet predefined quality attributes while minimizing their environmental impacts. Some resources on this topic include:
"A Review of Quality-by-Design and Life Cycle Assessment Concepts in the Pharmaceutical Industry" by Saeed Shojaee and Seyed Mohammad Razavi, which discusses the integration of QbD and LCA in the pharmaceutical industry.
"Quality-by-Design and Life Cycle Assessment for Sustainable Chemical Processes" by Damien Landesmann, which provides a framework for integrating QbD and LCA in the chemical industry.
Overall, the application of QbD and LCA in product and process design can help improve the quality and sustainability of products while minimizing their environmental impacts. There are many resources available on these topics, and the examples provided above are just a few to get started.

Answer
Dear Chandani Jamdade,
Writing the "Review of Literature" and "Discussion" sections of your dissertation is a crucial part of the research process. These sections serve different purposes, and I'll outline what you should include in each:
Review of Literature:
  1. Introduction
  2. Organizational Structure
  3. Inclusion Criteria
  4. Summarize and Synthesize
  5. Identify Gaps
  6. Cite and Reference
Discussion:
  1. Introduction
  2. Interpretation
  3. Implications
  4. Limitations
  5. Future Research
  6. Conclusion
  7. Link to Research Questions
  8. Avoid Repetition
Remember that the "Review of Literature" and "Discussion" sections should be well-structured, logically organized, and written in a clear, scholarly manner. They should also demonstrate your critical thinking, synthesis of information, and the depth of your understanding of the subject matter. It's often helpful to seek feedback from your advisor or committee members as you work on these sections of your dissertation.

The materials science dissertation did not conduct experimental studies. What is the name and how to search on the Internet for this type of dissertation, in which, for example, they simply applied some method or developed some approach, but did not directly experiment, for example, to change the structure, did not create any materials, substances and etc. among the sciences where it is usually required to do this (materials science, chemistry)? Give examples of such dissertations. Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
In the field of materials science or chemistry, dissertations that focus on theoretical or computational approaches rather than experimental studies are often referred to as "computational", "theoretical", or "simulation-based" dissertations. These types of dissertations primarily rely on modeling, simulation, data analysis, and computational methods to investigate and understand materials properties, phenomena, or processes.
To search for such dissertations on the internet, you can try the following approaches:
  1. University repositories: Many universities have online repositories where they store and provide access to their students' dissertations. Visit the websites of universities known for their materials science or chemistry programs and search their repositories using keywords like "computational materials science dissertation" or "theoretical chemistry dissertation".
  2. Academic search engines: Utilize academic search engines like Google Scholar, Scopus, or ResearchGate to search for dissertations related to computational or theoretical approaches in materials science or chemistry. Use relevant keywords and filters to narrow down your search results.
  3. Scientific journals and conference proceedings: Explore scientific journals and conference proceedings in the field of materials science or chemistry. Look for articles or papers that present theoretical or computational studies and check if they mention a corresponding dissertation. Often, authors include a reference to their dissertation in the paper's acknowledgments or author information.
  4. Collaborative research platforms: Platforms like Materials Project (materialsproject.org), which you mentioned earlier, host research articles and dissertations centered around computational materials science. Check their resources or publications sections to find dissertations or theses that align with your interests.
  5. Professional societies and associations: Visit the websites of materials science or chemistry professional societies and associations. They may provide access to published dissertations or maintain databases of member dissertations that cover various topics, including computational or theoretical approaches.
Remember that the availability of full dissertations may vary depending on the institution's policies and the author's preferences. In some cases, you may find abstracts or summaries that provide an overview of the dissertation's topic, methodology, and findings.
Here are a few examples of dissertations that focus on computational or theoretical approaches in materials science or chemistry:
  • "Computational Study of [specific topic] in Materials Science" (Author's Name, University)
  • "Theoretical Investigation of [specific phenomenon] in [material/system]" (Author's Name, University)
  • "Development and Application of [specific method/model] in Materials Science" (Author's Name, University)
Remember to replace [specific topic], [specific phenomenon], [material/system], [specific method/model], and (Author's Name, University) with relevant keywords and actual names.

What is the difference between a literary review and an abstract? Can you give examples of comparing an abstract and a literature review? Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
Difference between a Literature Review and an Abstract
A literature review and an abstract are two different elements of an academic paper. While an abstract is a brief summary of the paper, a literature review is a more detailed analysis of the existing literature on the topic.
Abstract: An abstract is a concise summary of an academic paper. It typically includes the purpose, methods, results, and conclusions of the study. An abstract is usually between 150 to 250 words long and is located at the beginning of the paper, before the introduction. Its purpose is to provide a brief overview of the paper's content, so that readers can quickly determine if the paper is relevant to their interests.
Literature Review: A literature review, on the other hand, is a comprehensive summary and analysis of the existing literature on a particular topic. It typically involves a thorough evaluation of scholarly articles, books, and other relevant sources, and aims to provide an overview of the current state of research on the topic. A literature review is usually longer than an abstract and can range from a few paragraphs to several pages.
Examples
To illustrate the difference between an abstract and a literature review, consider the following examples:
Abstract Example: This study examines the impact of technology on student learning outcomes in the classroom. Using a randomized controlled trial design, we compare the performance of students who receive technology-based instruction to those who receive traditional classroom instruction. Our results show that technology-based instruction is associated with higher student achievement in math and science.
Literature Review Example: This literature review examines the impact of technology on student learning outcomes in K-12 classrooms. The review includes a comprehensive analysis of existing research on the topic, including studies that have used randomized controlled trial designs, quasi-experimental designs, and observational studies. The review finds that while the use of technology in the classroom has the potential to enhance student learning outcomes, the specific conditions under which technology is most effective are still unclear. Future research should focus on identifying the most effective ways to integrate technology into the classroom to maximize student learning.

Hi,
I am looking to find out the appropriate statistical test for my dissertation.
I am looking to find out if there is a relationship between:
1) two ordinal variables
2) one ordinal and one nominal variable
my thinking so far is to use Spearmans rank coefficient for 1). The only issue I have is that not all data is paired (the ordinal question was optional) leaving me with 53 responses for one variable and 57 for the other. Would I have to adjust the input to remove the unpaired data?
for 2) I am looking to use Fishers exact as <80% of cells have 5 or less counts.
could someone let me know if they think this sounds correct? If not would anyone have any other suggestions?
many thanks
Relevant answer
Answer
@Stacey Provan
Spearman for case 1 and Chi2 for case 2 stunds good. However, the low counts is problematic for case 2. See if you could deal with this by combining groups for the ordinal variable. If nothing else works, you can dichotomize it (i.e. sort the population into just two groups above or below a certain value). Then you can use Fisher's test.

I'm currently writing my qualitative doctoral dissertation and I'm not quite sure how many extracts do I need to analyse? Are 30-40 extracts enough for a dissertation?
Relevant answer
Answer
The number of data extracts required can vary depending on the research question being addressed, the complexity of the data, the methodological approach used, and other factors. It may be best to consult with your dissertation advisor or committee members for guidance on selecting an appropriate number of data extracts to analyze and to ensure that your dissertation meets the requirements of your program. Additionally, you may find it helpful to review previous qualitative dissertations in your field to get an idea of the number of data extracts they used and how they analyzed them.

Hi all,
A little dilemma here. My team and I are conducting a systematic review on the psychosocial needs of newcomers for integration into Canada. We will include qualitative work that would generate insights into the needs and barriers that various newcomers experience - using an intersectional lens. Where we are debating is the inclusion of dissertations.
I have come across some incredibly relevant dissertations and I feel that because of the rigorous process of checks and reviews they go through, they are as reliable as peer-reviewed articles (if not more). But -
1. What are the arguments against not including theses/dissertations at all, if any?
2. Do we include both Master's theses and doctoral dissertations or only the latter?
Your ideas and insights on this would be extremely valuable to our process. Let me know if you require more information on this.
Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
Including master's theses and doctoral dissertations in your systematic review can be a valuable addition to your search strategy. These sources often contain original and detailed research that may not have been published in peer-reviewed journals or other sources. However, there are some arguments against including theses and dissertations in a systematic review. Some of these arguments include:
Quality Control: Unlike published peer-reviewed articles, theses and dissertations are not subject to the same level of scrutiny and review.
Limited Access: Some theses and dissertations may not be easily accessible, which can limit their inclusion in your review.
Publication Bias: Theses and dissertations are often focused on a specific topic or research area, which may result in publication bias.
When deciding whether to include master's theses and/or doctoral dissertations in your systematic review, it is important to consider the quality and relevance of the sources. You may want to focus on including theses and dissertations that are relevant to your research question and meet certain quality criteria. It is recommended that you consult with your team and consult the guidelines of the specific journal or publication you plan to submit your systematic review to for guidelines on including theses and dissertations.

Yes, it is possible to do a dissertation on cloud-based augmented reality for interactive STEM education. To complete your technical dissertation on this topic, you may need to conduct a thorough study of the existing literature on cloud-based AR technologies and their applications in STEM education. You may also need to develop a conceptual framework for your study, as well as a research methodology that will enable you to collect and analyze data. Depending on the specifics of your project, you may need to design and implement cloud-based AR systems, or conduct experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of such systems in enhancing STEM education. I'm starting a discussion on a topic that has bothered me for some time. Many missiological research pieces, especially doctoral dissertations, use qualitative research methods. Mission scholars collect rare and precious data related to missions from various cultural settings around the world. We mostly do a good job of collecting, organizing, and perhaps summarizing the data, but it seems to me that when it comes to data analysis, we often fall flat. Our analyses tend to remain at descriptive level, often not going beyond mere descriptions and summaries. It is rare to find missiological qualitative inquiries that reach a more conceptual, interpretive stage of data analysis. There seem to be a variety of reasons for these, but I wonder if the curriculum and structure of PhD and DMiss programs are the primary reasons for the lack of depth in analysis?
I would welcome your inputs on the issue, the cause, and solutions, or your outright disagreement with my argument as well! Thanks!

However, none of these citations are reflected in my profiles on ResearchGate, Google Scholar, or Web of Science. One possible reason for this discrepancy could be that most of these articles and theses have not been uploaded to ResearchGate, or it could be due to the language barrier of the content. This topic has generated a lot discussion on the ethical implications of using language models like ChatGPT in academic settings. It drives us to consider potential biases, accuracy issues, and professionalism in academia while employing such technology. Furthermore, it encourages the investigation of alternate ways or complementary approaches that can improve academic success while resolving concerns about the incorporation of ChatGPT.
By considering the use of ChatGPT as a catalyst, and given the controversy surrounding their role, what are the potential benefits and drawbacks of introducing ChatGPT or similar language models into the academic product creation process? and does it assist the academic researcher in producing an efficient and engaging academic output, or does it cause the researcher to lose their ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely and conveying arguments in a logical and convincing manner?

If I am doing Ethnoarchaeology study, Can I just do one case study for doctoral dissertations or should I add one or two casestudies?
Relevant answer
Answer
It is entirely dependent on the research questions you are posing. An ethnoarchaeological survey of literature about various groups of people can provide library-based comparative examples from societies with similar social, subsistence, or technological practices, or particular kinds of environments, that are relevant to your research questions. Broad research from the ethnographic literature is always useful for developing a good comparative sense of the problem you are researching. Engaging in a single field-based ethnarchaeological project can be a big undertaking. In general, multiple month longitudinal research is preferable to very short field visits. Almost everything we think about how lifetime hunter-gatherers or small scale agriculturalists do particular things is under-informed , and our ignorance benefits from immersion over time with a particular field site. Setting top field sites is a lot of work, so focusing on a single community develops relationships that are crucial for expanding our learning beyond even the initial research problem. Learning the indigenous language can be critical to more productive investigations, working in translation is not ideal. I have performed ethnoarchaeological research with hunter-gatherers in Venezuela until the country's politics & economy made continued fieldwork impossible (I have 30+ months in the community, learned their language as they were monolingual and spoke no Spanish, and spent over 11 months in permitting in Caracas) and now have over 17 months of ethnoarchaeological experience with traditional Maya farmers in the Yucatan (while many people do speak Spanish, the more May I learn the better my fieldwork). These ethnoarchaeological/ethnographic experiences have been critical for making me a more integrated anthropologist, I now better understand the relationship between archeology, biological anthropology, behavioral ecology, linguistics, kinship studies, etc. in the broader field of anthropology than when I was only an archaeological specialist.

I am writing my dissertation for female representation of Hollywood female-led films. And I am going to choose one film as my main case study. I would like to analyse the images and character's line to illustrate how gender stereotypes have been both challenged and reinforced in the film. However, I am struggling to choose a methodology for my dissertation. I have read some articles, but I am still confused about which one shall I choose. May I please have some suggestions? Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
Both content analysis and thematic analysis are methods for analyzing qualitative data, but they differ in some key ways.
Content analysis involves systematically categorizing and quantifying the content of a communication, such as speech, writing, or visual media. This can involve coding the content of the communication according to specific predefined categories. For example, in a study of gender stereotypes in film, content analysis might involve coding the gender of each character, or categorizing types of dialogue as reinforcing or challenging gender stereotypes.
Thematic analysis, on the other hand, involves identifying and analyzing recurring patterns or themes within qualitative data. This process is more interpretive and less focused on categorization and quantification than content analysis. For example, in a study of gender stereotypes in film using thematic analysis, a researcher might identify key themes related to the representation of women and analyze how they are portrayed in the film.
Both content analysis and thematic analysis can be considered types of textual analysis, which is a broader category of methods that involve analyzing written or spoken language or other forms of text.
For your dissertation, given your research question, it sounds like content analysis might be a good fit, as you are interested in analyzing the content of the film in a systematic way to identify how gender stereotypes are both challenged and reinforced. You may want to consider developing a coding scheme to categorize different aspects of the film's content, such as the gender of characters and types of dialogue. However, it's ultimately up to you to choose the most appropriate method based on your research question and the data you will be analyzing.

Developments in Bioengineering and Materials Engineering have in common the processes of physical chemistry. I am developing a method strictly based on these processes and more precisely on the effects of polarization, entropy and internal energy that determine viscosity and redox energetic processes at interfaces. I use it to predict and forecast the lifetime of materials and relate it to their manufacture. I believe that in many areas of biology and medicine, pharmacology and traumatology, radiation treatment and surgical tools, research on the mechanisms that determine the properties of materials will contribute to progress. I propose an online training course giving access to a synthesis book, several unpublished publications and training modules in the form of videos.

Hello,
Maybe it is worth to take a view on litterature - ex. Curtis's Global Cities and Global Order (2016) before formulating your research question, which seems quite general to me - and as you see by the title of the book above, already treated.
As said above, you may find an specific sector or maybe an specific city to work on, but only once you've done a deep state of the art. Reading will allow you to identify your niche and then your research question.
I am adding an exemple on how to take the question - a study from CIDOB by Curtis.
Hope that helps, and good luck with your dissertation!

hi ,

deep learning :
auto - encoder , recursive deep learning , extreme learning machine , convertional neural network , to predict financial distress ,
and explain to me this models, and how the classiffier data and filter it , this study on egyptian listed companies
Relevant answer
Answer
To start, let's go through each of the models you mentioned and their characteristics:
  1. Logistic regression: a statistical model that analyzes the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. It is commonly used to predict the probability of a binary outcome (e.g., whether a company will experience financial distress or not) based on a set of input features.
  2. Random Forest: an ensemble learning method that constructs multiple decision trees and combines their predictions to improve accuracy and prevent overfitting.
  3. Multidimensional scaling analysis (MDA): a statistical technique that visualizes the similarities and differences between data points by representing them in a lower-dimensional space.
  4. Support Vector Machines (SVMs): a machine learning algorithm that identifies a hyperplane in a high-dimensional space that separates data points into different classes. It can be used for both classification and regression tasks.
  5. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA): a non-parametric method for measuring the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) based on multiple input and output variables.
  6. Auto-encoder: a neural network that learns to compress and reconstruct data from a lower-dimensional representation. It can be used for unsupervised feature learning and anomaly detection.
  7. Recursive deep learning: a type of deep learning model that uses recursive connections to process sequences of inputs, such as time series data.
  8. Extreme Learning Machine (ELM): a type of neural network that randomly generates input weights and learns only the output weights, making it faster and more efficient than traditional neural networks.
  9. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs): a type of deep learning model that is commonly used for image and signal processing. It learns to identify patterns by applying convolutional filters to input data.
In terms of classifying and filtering data, each model has its own approach. Logistic regression, for example, uses a threshold probability to determine whether a data point belongs to a certain class. Random Forest combines the predictions of multiple decision trees to improve accuracy. SVMs identify a hyperplane that maximizes the margin between different classes of data points. DEA calculates the efficiency of each decision-making unit based on its input and output variables. Auto-encoders learn to reconstruct input data from a compressed representation. Recursive deep learning models process sequences of inputs, and ELMs and CNNs use neural networks to identify patterns in data.
In your dissertation, you can compare the performance of these models in predicting financial distress in Egyptian listed companies by evaluating metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. You can also analyze the features that are most important for each model in making predictions, and discuss the potential limitations and challenges of using these models in practice.

Question

Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie here and to writing researches as well. I'm currently engaged in writing my first research (dissertation) for academic purposes and need some help with the same.
Here is the problem:
I have two scales that I want to correlate. One is a 60-item True/False Codependency Scale with a scoring range like this: Below 20 You have Little Need for Concern 21 - 30 Moderate Need for Concern. 31 - 45 Moderate to Severe Need for Concern. 46 or over Severe Need for Concern
The other one is a 36-item 7-point Likert Attachment scale with 2 further subscales (Avoidant & Anxious) of 18 items each. The scoring of this is based on calculating the averages of the responses.
Can somebody please confirm the level of the measurement of both scales (i.e., the four categories of the 1st scale and the 2 subscales of the 2nd scale) as well as the correlation method that I can use in Spss? Although correlation is strongly preferred but if it can't be used, please advise on another method.
P.S.- My supervisor suggested they're both interval but didn't explain how. I'd like to know this too.
Thanks a lot! :)
Relevant answer
Answer
Lavanya Bahl First, it is important to distinguish between the ordinal item rating OPTIONS and the summation of the ORDINAL item ratings into the overall rating SCALE. The rating scale ranges from lowest to highest possible TOTAL scores. Under certain conditions, that summed total score represents an INTERVAL-level score.
With this in mind, you have produced multiple scales for which the conditions described by Likert may or may not be met. The dichotomous True/False options do not adhere to a Likert item structure. The rating options for the 7-point attachment items are not shared so they may or may not adhere to Likert's level of agreement construct. You did, however, sum the scores (to get the average) which is the customary process in developing an interval level scale under the Likert conditions.
Is it possible to run correlations between columns of summed scores in SPSS? Yes, the dutiful software will do what it is commanded (within reason) and produce correlation coefficient estimates. However, it is important for you to explain your process prior to generating these estimates in order for the reader to fully appreciate the correlation estimates.

Hi, I am doing my dissertation as a systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of daratumumab in relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma. I am using clinical trials as my source and do not know how to conduct a meta-analysis on it as there are no control groups. My goal is to create a forest plot and gain an overall response ratio (95% CI) and generate a p-value. I would ideally like to do this on RevMan or any other free software as I do not have access to any of the paid software.
Relevant answer
Answer
Meta-analysis is a statistical method that combines results from multiple studies to generate a summary estimate of the effect size of a particular intervention or exposure. The steps to conducting a meta-analysis for clinical data include:
  1. Define the research question and identify relevant studies: Determine the clinical question or problem that the meta-analysis will address, and identify studies that are relevant to the question. This can be done by conducting a comprehensive literature search using databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase.
  2. Evaluate the quality of the studies: Assess the quality of the studies using established criteria, such as the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool or the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. This will help to determine which studies are of high enough quality to be included in the meta-analysis.
  3. Extract data from the studies: Collect relevant data from each study, including information about the study design, sample size, intervention or exposure, outcome measures, and effect sizes.
  4. Analyze the data: Use statistical software such as R or STATA to analyze the data. Depending on the type of data and research question, the analysis may involve calculating summary statistics, conducting regression analyses, or using other statistical methods.
  5. Conduct a meta-analysis: Combine the results of the individual studies to generate an overall estimate of the effect size using statistical methods such as fixed-effect or random-effects models.
  6. Interpret the results: Interpret the results of the meta-analysis and draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the intervention or exposure. Assess the level of heterogeneity between studies, and conduct sensitivity analyses to explore the robustness of the results.
  7. Report the findings: Write up the results of the meta-analysis in a clear and concise manner, including details about the studies included, the methods used, and the results of the analysis. This should be done following established reporting guidelines such as the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement.
It's important to note that conducting a meta-analysis requires a solid understanding of statistical methods and research design, so it's recommended to seek the help of a statistician or experienced researcher to ensure the analysis is conducted appropriately.
