I am preparing a chapter for my research paper and I would like to know your opinion on the possible difference between the notion of interpretability and explainability of machine learning models. There is no one clear definition of these two concepts in the literature. What is your opinion about it?
Relevant answer
Answer
In the realm of machine learning, the terms "interpretability" and "explainability" are often used interchangeably, but they do carry subtle differences in their connotations and implications.
**Interpretability** generally refers to the ability to understand and make sense of the internal workings or mechanisms of a machine learning model. It's about grasping how the model arrives at its predictions or decisions, often in a human-understandable manner. Interpretable models tend to have simple and transparent structures, such as decision trees or linear regression models, which allow stakeholders to follow the model's reasoning and trust its outputs.
**Explainability** on the other hand, extends beyond just understanding the model's internal workings to providing explicit explanations for its outputs or predictions. Explainable models not only produce results but also offer accompanying justifications or rationales for those results, aimed at clarifying why a certain prediction was made. This could involve highlighting important features, demonstrating decision paths, or providing contextual information that sheds light on the model's reasoning process.
In essence, interpretability is about comprehending the model itself, while explainability is about articulating the model's outputs in a way that is meaningful and useful to human stakeholders. While a model may be interpretable by virtue of its simplicity or transparency, it may not necessarily be explainable if it fails to provide clear justifications for its decisions. Conversely, a complex model may not be easily interpretable, but it can still strive to be explainable by offering insightful explanations for its predictions.
Both interpretability and explainability are crucial aspects of deploying machine learning models in real-world applications, especially in domains where trust, accountability, and regulatory compliance are paramount. By fostering understanding and trust in AI systems, interpretability and explainability pave the way for more responsible and ethical AI adoption, ultimately benefiting both developers and end-users alike.

Hello! It is my first time on this platform and I have been wanting to know the policies and process on how I can publish my research papers and also have them peer-reviewed. Thank you very much.
Relevant answer
Answer
Please note that ResearchGate is not a publisher and not a journal, you cannot "publish" a paper here. It is a platform for papers published in journals, or to present unpublished texts, data etc. See also "Is ResearchGate a publisher?" in https://help.researchgate.net/hc/en-us/articles/14292596164753. You should look for a journal in your field of research and submit your paper there. See also the following discussions for recommendations:

How to get research papers with their cites, and what are the keywords you have to put to get context/articles/papers you need?
Relevant answer
Answer
ResearchGate's search function is rather elementary, it is not possible to do a sophisticated search. See https://help.researchgate.net/hc/en-us/articles/14292986311825-Discovering-and-requesting-research for some instructions. However, there are many other platforms like Google Scholar and others where you can search for research papers. Usually, the best platforms and bibliographic databases are those that relate to a specific field of research. Unfortunately, I don't know of any in your field (Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Neural Network, Programming Languages). Perhaps others may help.

As Editorial member of peer reviewed journals, I have been alerted to a new malpractice in the area of scientific publications. Currently, an increasing number of journals have been targeted by some organisations that aim to manipulate the peer review process, known as paper mills. What’s a paper mill? A paper mill is an organisation that offers services to individuals that include: - Writing a manuscript on their behalf and submitting to a journal of their choice; - Writing a manuscript which the paper mill submits to a journal, which when accepted, they sell the authorship of (with varying fees depending on the order of the author); - Writing an article which an individual will pay to add superfluous references to, in order to boost their citation score; - Installing reviewers into a journal site, who commit reviewer fraud. Paper mills operate globally, and there are academics from across the world involved. Papers can be perfectly acceptable research papers, or they may be research papers where the research was never conducted, or they do not make sense to the reader. There are procedures to prevent paper mill activities; however, it is our responsibility, as member of the research community, to engage in ethical behavior, and to promote fairness and rigor in research and dissemination activities.

please tell the research paper writing steps from beginning to end.
Relevant answer
Answer
Writing a research paper requires careful planning, thorough research, and strong writing skills. Begin by selecting a well-defined topic that interests you and aligns with the assignment requirements. Develop a clear thesis statement that outlines your argument or key findings. Conduct comprehensive research using credible sources, such as academic journals, books, and reputable websites. Take detailed notes and organize your information in a logical manner to support your thesis. Craft an outline to structure your paper and ensure all necessary components are included, such as an introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. Write each section with clarity and precision while adhering to proper formatting guidelines. Finally, revise and edit your work for grammar, spelling errors, and coherence before submitting it for evaluation. By following these steps diligently, you can produce a high-quality research paper that demonstrates your expertise on the subject matter.

Question

Currently the research paper I am working on, I want to fulfill three specific objectives but they do not seem to be fulfilled by one type of statistical analysis only. And I wanted to use regression analysis of survey result for the 1st objective, graphical analysis for the 2nd one and conceptual analysis for the 3rd one. Is it possible to use 3 different methods or is it mandatory to show only one statistical analysis to fulfill all 3 of the objectives?
Relevant answer
Saludos.

Answer
Should researchers use AI to write papers? Group aims for community-driven standards
Tools such as ChatGPT may be used for 1% to 5% of manuscripts, recent estimates suggest...
"When and how should text-generating artificial intelligence (AI) programs such as ChatGPT help write research papers? In the coming months, 4000 researchers from a variety of disciplines and countries will weigh in on guidelines that could be adopted widely across academic publishing, which has been grappling with chatbots and other AI issues for the past year and a half. The group behind the effort wants to replace the piecemeal landscape of current guidelines with a single set of standards that represents a consensus of the research community.
Known as CANGARU, the initiative is a partnership between researchers and publishers including Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley; representatives from journals eLife, Cell, and The BMJ; as well as industry body the Committee on Publication Ethics. The group hopes to release a final set of guidelines by August, which will be updated every year because of the “fast evolving nature of this technology,” says Giovanni Cacciamani, a urologist at the University of Southern California who leads CANGARU. The guidelines will include a list of ways authors should not use the large language models (LLMs) that power chatbots and how they should disclose other uses..."

When I am training deep learning model with different architectures, some time I have to change the batch size to prevent from Resource Exhausted Error condition. Is comparing the performance of these models trained in different batch size an issue or not?
I see lot research paper where batch size is defined fixed.
Relevant answer
Answer
Batch size plays a crucial role in training deep learning models. While larger batches are conventionally believed to enhance model performance, there is evidence suggesting the contrary, especially when using autoencoders for data with global similarities and local differences. Large batch sizes can lead to a generalization gap, impacting model optimization and performance. For glaucoma detection, the optimal batch size for fine-tuned pre-trained models significantly influences performance, with ensemble models further enhancing results. In edge device applications, adjusting batch sizes can maximize GPU resource utilization and improve inference speed. Therefore, selecting an appropriate batch size is essential for optimizing deep learning model training and performance across various applications.
Smaller batch sizes surprisingly improve performance in medical autoencoders, capturing more biologically meaningful information and enhancing individual variation in latent spaces derived from EHR and medical imaging data.
Large batch sizes in deep learning models lead to increased near-rank loss of units' activation tensors, impacting model optimization and generalization.

I am new to Abaqus modelling and for studying I am modelling a damper seen in a research paper. I believe I have modelled it correctly, but when I run the analysis the model shows barely any deformation.
The model is a plate damper with slits and connecting bolt holes. The right side bolt holes are encastre and the left ones are coupled to a reference point. A cycic displacement is applied through this reference point. Both material and geometric nonlinearities are considered.
Can someone help? I have attached the files.
Relevant answer
Answer
To address the minimal deformation issue in your plate damper model in Abaqus:
  1. Check the applied load to ensure it is sufficient.
  2. Verify the accuracy of material properties.
  3. Evaluate and refine the mesh if necessary.
  4. Review the nonlinear analysis settings for accuracy.
  5. Confirm that the boundary conditions accurately represent the physical constraints.

I am currently implementing the following two RL algorithms for 5G
(i) Power control to maximize throughput in a multi-gNB multi-UE scenario, and
(ii) Maximizing throughput subject to delay constraints in a single-gNB multi-UE scenario
I have made significant progress using an external Python program connected to NetSim's gNB scheduler. This setup facilitates the exchange of states and rewards between the scheduler and the Python program.
I am interested in exploring scenarios with time delays in state-reward exchanges, such as delayed state reception. How does RL adapt in such situations? I would appreciate any relevant research papers on this topic

I can start with a constant delay MDP. As regards the RL algorithm, I can start with tabular Q-Learning if that is easier

In the process of drafting a new research article, which structure is most effective? Should one follow the order of Introduction, Materials and Methods, Data Analysis, Results, and Discussion, or is it better to write the Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion first and leave the Introduction for the end? What is the commonly adopted approach by other scholars/researcher around the world?
Relevant answer
Answer
In terms of the writing process, I prefer to begin with the Results section because it is usually the most concrete, and the Methods section follows more or less automatically from that. Once I have those completed, I have a better idea of what the Introduction and Background sections should look like, which then leads me to the most appropriate Discussion and Conclusions.

If after doing PhD, a research scholar has 4 to 5 papers published, and all are published in the same journal (SCIE), then what impact does it have on his future teaching, academic career, or post-doc?
Relevant answer
Answer
I think it is not a good idea to publish so many PhD thesis related research papers in one journal; it is better if the papers are published in different journals. If you decide to publish all papers in one journal, then you should select a high impact journal, and it is not easily possible. Top high impacts journals have very strict rules and high standards to select papers for publication. However, the importance of the research papers to fill the research gaps bring worth and appreciation.

Why research papers are being rejected by journals?
Relevant answer
Answer
In answering this question, it is necessary to answer some journal-specific and research article-specific questions.
Questions to be answered depending on the journal:
- Is the research appropriate for the purpose and scope of the journal?
-Does the research meet the journal's (quantitative) acceptance requirements? Does it consist of words within the number of words specified by the journal?
- Does the research meet the qualifications specified by the journal (academic language, accuracy, clarity)?
- Does the research contribute to the field by providing a new perspective?
Questions to be answered depending on the Research Article:
-Does the title of the research fully describe the research?
-Is the rationale and purpose of the research sufficiently explained? Has a comprehensive literature review been conducted, and have deficiencies been identified?
-Are the variables that make up the research context clearly stated and explained?
-Is the theoretical basis or foundations of the research clear?
-Is the methodology sufficient to realize the purpose of the research?
- Is there an Ethics Committee Certificate for the research article?
-Is the population and sample of the research article clear?
- Are the research processes explained in the research article?
- Is the research article clear about validity and reliability in quantitative studies, credibility in qualitative studies, and the role of the researcher?
-Are the data collection tools used appropriate for the research?
-Is it explained why the data collection tool should be used?
-If used, is the scale, etc., justified why that scale was used?
-Is the analysis phase of the research sufficiently clear?
-Are the findings explained in the research article?
-Do the conclusions and recommendations coincide with the findings of the research article?
-Are the contributions of the research article to the field listed in items?
I look for answers to these questions while writing articles and refereeing. In other words, I use these questions like a checklist.

1. The amount of money is very limited. The stakes are so low. A lot of academic hours are put into writing grants and many times they go nowhere.
2. You are always trying to be known. This competition leads to toxic relationships.
3. Academics are compared using metrics. Then people are valued as if they were numbers, rankings. The value as a person is put aside. This promotes toxic behavior among researchers, because to increase their ranking, many researchers start doing unethical things, such as threatening someone. The university system doesn't stop toxic behavior. It rewards it and creates a cycle of toxicity within its own system.
4. The toxic culture goes from the very top. There is always the requirement to have more papers, bring more money to the university, always more!!!
5. Many things are best left to luck. A low ranking does not mean that you have not worked hard.
6. Is it fair for one professor to be the official supervisor of more than 50 students at a time? This is a joke!
7. You can get sick from this toxicity and not see what is wrong anymore.

Hello,
Former researcher turned school teacher.
I'm looking for short form research papers, possibly some who don't use too many unexplained acronyms and give a lot for granted, for a school project about scientific literacy. The papers should result from 1-3 experiments and have about 2-3 figures, so they don't require a massive amount of work to read/summarize. I'm thinking something in the 5-6 pages size
I am having trouble as I don't have access to that many science journals and "short form research paper" is not a good search line.
Would you be able to help me out? I'd be super thankful. Any science subject will do. The project is about reading and deciphering short research papers.

As an academician, it is our scholarly responsibility to review other's similar type of action through review and giving constructive feedback. But, does it count the same when we are reviewing research papers (to be published) for international journals who take thousands of dollars or pounds from the authors for that publication and offering nothing to the reviewers? If the journal is not having any APC then it is okay, but reviewers should not review for those who are having APC. What do u think about this?

All about article retraction in academic publishing
Retraction is removing an article from the scientific record at any point after its publication. Retraction is distinct from withdrawal, which occurs prior to publication. Also, in contrast to withdrawal, retractions are visible to the scientific community, as the original papers are typically preserved as part of the publication record.

Hi,
I was lucky enough to get my paper in the cover of Deep Sea Rearch Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers in 2022. Now I'm wondering to get a good picture of the cover to frame it. Unfortunately, they did send us the cover with the final design and at the DSR page the quality is very (very) low. They offer download the cover but just the picture without the journal graphic design. To add more sadness and touch your souls, we don't get the journal in our library.... So, if someone have for any chance access to the volume 186 of Deep Sea Research Part I and can send the scan, or a good picture, I would deeply graceful. It was one of my PhD tessis papers and having a cover was a nice thing to keep in my studio.

I want to do serious research work on heart disease prediction before it reaches its peak level. It has been found in various research papers that patients reach the hospital when the disease has reached its peak level; consulting doctors and experts before disease maturity is an advantage.
Relevant answer
Answer
Our research aims to advance heart disease prediction utilizing AI techniques, with a particular focus on early detection before disease progression reaches its peak severity. Leveraging insights from our recent preprint review article (https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.07609), we propose integrating retinal imaging as a non-invasive approach for assessing cardiovascular risk. Our opinion underscores the potential of AI algorithms, notably CNNs, to analyze retinal biomarkers indicative of heart disease risk. By combining AI-driven analysis of retinal features with clinical data, we advocate for the development of predictive models facilitating proactive intervention strategies. This approach holds promise for timely medical management, enabling interventions to be initiated before the disease reaches its peak severity.

I am working on CAT25 microsatellite biomarker. The melt curve shows two peaks while single band appears on the gel. Primers are taken from the published research papers. The DNA is of healthy individual. The umelt/quartz derivative plot also shows two peaks. The results of HRM and gel are attached. What could be the most likely reason of two peaks?
Relevant answer
Answer
A single PCR product can have multiple melting transitions that equate to peaks. The PCR product will appear singular on a gel but the product isn't fully denaturing at a single temperature. Often, one region denatures at a lower temperature (AT rich) while the other half (perhaps GC rich) of the amplicon denatures at a higher temperature. It is a more complex melting behavior due to differences in nucleotide content that are creating more stable and less stable regions of your amplicon that are different enough in Tm to create multiple peaks. Try the melt map version (https://www.dna-utah.org/umelt/quartz/map.php) and it will help you identify the regions and how different they actually are in terms of stability.

You have to make them identical by editing, then the two entries will merge automatically. Recently, in a research paper, i found that the author had optimized the structures in an S1 excited state (S0 = G.S).
Relevant answer
Answer
Greetings, regarding the syntax, It is really easy.
In Gaussian the keyword "root", used in TD, select a given excited state to be optimized, so, let's consider you want to optimize the the third excited state:
#p opt TD=(nstates=6,root=3) wb97xd/def2tzvp
This will calculate 6 excited states and optimize the third one (using the theory level you choose, for example, wb97xd/def2tzvp). If you already have performed a TDDFT calculation before and don't want to recalculate everything, you can read the results from the .chk file:
#p opt TD=(read, root=3) wb97xd/def2tzvp density=current guess=read geom=allcheck
But ALWAYS select a couple or more excited states to calculate than the one you are optimizing, otherwise you won't get a proper result, for example, for root=3 try to always select at least nstate=6.

Market regime detection is an important problem in finance, as it involves identifying shifts in the behavior of financial markets over time. Understanding these shifts can help investors to manage risk and develop more effective trading strategies. I do not know whether the optical fibers used are unidirectional or bidirectional, and there is a problem when I reconnect the optical fiber in ring2 to the optical coupler. No signal appears on the optical Spectrum Analyzer. Do you have information that can help me about the Vernier effect? I have attached the research paper and the simulation to the Opti System program. Best Regards.

Dear Dr Stephen Nowicki -
If you've downloaded research papers but are having trouble accessing them, here are some steps you can take to locate and open the downloaded files:
  1. Check the Download Folder: Most browsers save downloaded files to a default folder. Look in your browser's settings or preferences to find the default download location. Common default download folders are "Downloads" on Windows and "Downloads" or "Desktop" on macOS.
  2. Use the Search Function: If you remember the name of the research paper or keywords, you can use the search function on your computer to look for the file. On Windows, use the search bar in the File Explorer. On macOS, use Spotlight search.
  3. Look in the Browser's Download History: Check your browser's download history to see a list of recently downloaded files. In most browsers, you can access the download history by pressing Ctrl+J (Windows) or Command+Shift+J (macOS).
  4. Check Recent Files or Documents: Many operating systems keep track of recently opened files. Check your system's list of recent files or documents to find the research papers. On Windows, you can find recent files in the Start menu under "Recent." On macOS, recent files can be found in the Apple menu under "Recent Items."
  5. Use a File Manager: If you are using a file manager (Explorer on Windows, Finder on macOS), navigate to the folders where you typically store downloaded files.
  6. Sort Files by Date: Sort files in the download folder or relevant folders by date to find the most recently downloaded files.
  7. Check Cloud Storage or Email: If you downloaded papers from an email attachment or a cloud storage service, check those platforms for the files.
  8. File Extensions: Research papers might be saved with file extensions such as .pdf, .docx, .txt, etc. Make sure you are looking for the correct file type.
  9. Re-Download if Necessary: If you still can't find the files, and you downloaded them from a reputable source, consider re-downloading them.
Remember that the steps might vary slightly depending on your operating system and the browser you used to download the papers. If you provide more specific details about the operating system and browser, I can offer more targeted guidance.

Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet software that allows users to create and manipulate data using formulas, equations, and models. Here are some key features and aspects related to using formulas, equations, and models in an Excel sheet:
Formulas:
  1. Basic Arithmetic Formulas:Addition: =A1 + B1 Subtraction: =A1 - B1 Multiplication: =A1 * B1 Division: =A1 / B1
  2. Functions:Excel has numerous built-in functions (e.g., SUM, AVERAGE, IF, VLOOKUP) that you can use to perform specific operations on your data.
  3. Custom Formulas:You can create your own formulas by combining operators, functions, and cell references.
Equations:
  1. Solver Add-In:Excel includes a Solver Add-In that allows you to solve optimization and equation problems. It can be activated in Excel's Add-Ins menu.
  2. Mathematical Equations:You can enter mathematical equations directly into cells. For instance, typing =A1^2 + B1^2 will square the values in cells A1 and B1 and sum them.
Models:
  1. What-If Analysis:Excel allows for What-If Analysis using scenarios and data tables, where you can model different scenarios based on changing input values.
  2. Scenario Manager:Excel's Scenario Manager helps you create and manage different scenarios to analyze the impact of changes in variables on your model.
  3. PivotTables:PivotTables can be used to analyze and model data in a more dynamic and interactive way.
  4. Data Validation:You can use data validation to set constraints on the type of data entered in a cell, ensuring the integrity of your models.
  5. Charts and Graphs:Visual representation of data through charts and graphs can enhance the understanding of your models.
Data Analysis:
  1. Regression Analysis:Excel has built-in tools for regression analysis that can help model relationships between variables.
  2. Goal Seek:Goal Seek allows you to set a target value and find the input needed to achieve that result, useful for modeling desired outcomes.

I would like to inquire about the requirement of payment for publishing scientific research papers in international journals. Specifically, I am interested in knowing whether there are fees associated with the publication process. Additionally, I would greatly appreciate your recommendations for reputable fields or disciplines that offer opportunities for publication, with a preference for those that provide free publishing options, if such options exist. Thank you.

Unfortunately, in my experience, there are many paid ones. But there are also many unpaid ones, luckily (unless you choose open access as Dr Wolfgang R. Dick mentioned)).
I would suggest you need to keep looking for journals relevant to your topic of interest and choose a relevant unpaid one. Unpaid ones may have a slightly longer review time; that is potentially another disadvantage.
