At least in the economic arena, by this time the norm should have been green microeconomics and green macroeconomy since 2012 Rio +20 as the tools to be taught to deal with the environmental crisis as consensus on paradigm change to green market, green growth, and green economies was reached/RIO +20 Conference/UNCSD 2012, but traditional economic thinking and traditional macroeconomic thinking is still the norm, which means that universities knowingly or not are normalizing paradigm shift avoidance, and blocking the growth of knowledge a la Thomas Kuhn; and this raises the question: Paradigm shift avoidance and universities, do they have a duty to science based paradigm evolution of knowledge?
what do you think?
Simply state Yes and give your opinion on why you think Yes or say No, and state your opinion on why you think No.
Relevant answer
Answer
Alexander, thank you for taking the time to comment.
David did not answer the question directly, yet I politely still reply to him as he at least express his opinion.
The question is about green market paradigm shift avoidance since 2012 Rio +20 and university duties to the growth of science based knowledge that leaves traditional economic thinking behind, and you have not tried to answer the question at had here, which is: Paradigm shift avoidance and universities, do they have a duty to science based paradigm evolution of knowledge?
What is your opinion, Yes and why you think so or No and why you think so.
Then we go from there.
Respectfully yours;

Question

I was recently asked by LinkedIn to respond to and elaborate on this question, given a post of mine on this subject there. Before I provide my response here on researchgate.net, I wish to ask this question within this forum's context.
There are numerous angles one can take in approaching this critical question which is likely to affect not only Colleges and Universities' built infrastructure, but also their basic functions: teaching and research.
Obviously, there are currently expected future effects in both the short as well as the longer term of Artificial Intelligence upon Higher Education. Hence, the informed and educated views from the academic community are solicited here with this generic type of question. Thank you for your attention.
Relevant answer
Answer
Here's my verbatim reply to the LinkedIn posed question for me to answer:
“I have previously addressed the possible positive and negative effects I see AI having on higher education and its institutions. I view AI as the ability to both first store extraordinarily rich data and information, as well as its ability to intelligently access and process selective sets of data from that storage and memory. In those two capacities, I view AI as both assisting as well as potentially derailing the teaching and research capacities of higher learning. Perils from AI abound, as do opportunities. One must be very alert and diligent in employing AI and stating that the outcome is, or does contain, AI products”.
Here's a bit more of an elaboration on the negative aspects, as I currently see them; these concerns refer mostly to the ethical sides of AI impacts, as well as to certain epistemological issues involved.
Perils lurk when real professors and intelligence will be supplanted by artificial professors and artificial intelligence (something that has already commenced). When real campus and person-to-person interaction will be transformed into a virtual campus and virtual, online, interaction of students with machines and robots.
But potentially, the biggest loss will occur when the real/human creativity and innovation, the very agency that created the virtual/artificial world (to which AI is just a part) will become fake (or, better put, result in lack of) innovation, i.e., to the death of real creativity.

What should be the Capillary Number obtained for water flow inside a silicone microchannel so that we can ignore the Capillary Effect in this study?
My study investigated forced flow with Reynolds numbers between 125 and 1300.
If our criterion for the capillary number is 1, and we consider the capillary effect non-negligible for low values of 1, according to the capillary equation, the capillary effect cannot be neglected in many conditions and cases. For this reason, I think the value of 1 is not a critical value.
Also, the denominator of the capillary number equation is related to the surface tension parameter. Is the value of this parameter equal to 0.0726 N/m, which is the surface tension between water and air, or should we put the surface tension between water and a solid wall (silicon)? In many research studies, authors have used the value of 0.0726 N/m.
Ca=μ*U/σ
Relevant answer
Answer
In discussions regarding the appropriate Capillary Number (Ca) for ignoring capillary effects in microchannel studies, it's essential to consider the context of the interface interactions. Typically, for water flow inside silicone microchannels, many studies, including mine, use the water-air surface tension value of 0.0726 N/m. This is generally because the dominant interface under investigation is between the water and air, not between the water and the silicone walls, unless specific surface modifications of the silicone suggest otherwise.
Furthermore, concerning the critical value of Ca, while the standard threshold is often set at Ca = 1, I believe this may not be universally applicable. In my study, which investigates forced flow with Reynolds numbers between 125 and 1300, it appears that capillary effects could be non-negligible even above this threshold. This observation leads me to suggest that the traditional threshold of Ca = 1 might need adjustment based on specific experimental conditions and flow behaviors. Such an approach allows for a more nuanced understanding of when viscous forces indeed dominate over capillary forces in practical scenarios

My work will contribute to the field of TESOL and Applied Linguistics. I’ll investigate the theory of conceptual metaphor by G. Lakoff (2004) and the theory of metaphorical modelling by A.P. Chudinov (2001). We’ll use in our research Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) which was introduced by E. Semino from Lancaster University (Pragglejaz group, 2007). Most of the previous works provided theoretical explanation of the metaphor, i.e. they analyzed its source domains and target domain (Lakoff, 2004) and metaphorical models within some types of discourse (Chudinov, 2001) or functions of metaphors in different kinds of discourses (Terry, 2019). What we want to do is to show that metaphors can be taught not from theoretical, but from the practical perspective and therefore it can make better teachers out of us; students will be able to understand more sophisticated forms of the language, i.e. it will develop students’ vocabulary (Tier 2, academic words) and it will develop students’ metaphor awareness.

"No, a degree isn't necessary to become a software engineer. Since the work relies so heavily on technical skill, you could get a job simply by proving that you know how to do the work. Most job interviews for software engineers will assign you a series of tests to gauge your abilities."
Relevant answer
Answer
There has always been a debate on practical education vs theoretical education. The question of learning software engineering without a degree posit into this argument. I learnt software engineering without a degree. It was passion and hands on practice. I have gained much technical skills with constant practice over the years but that notwithstanding, I realize that the practical skills are based on some theories. And for these theories, I go back to all the time. Practical skills are good however, understanding the theories before the practice makes one a better engineer. Hence getting a degree, which deals more with theories prepares a better foundation for practical skills.
It is worth noting that starting with practical skills may take an individual a longer time to understand the concepts and principles in a particular field whereas starting with the theories makes practical lessons easy. I must admit that some persons are naturally inclined to theoretical education while other do well in practical skills. That notwithstanding, the best is to blend both theoretical and practical skills.

There isn't a secret contract among universities regarding the acceptance of new students, but there are some practices and understandings that might seem like a "gentleman's agreement" among certain elite universities. These can include:
1. Admissions Standards: While each university has its own admissions criteria, there might be some unspoken understanding about the caliber of students admitted. Elite universities often have high standards and look for exceptional academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and personal qualities.
2. Overlap in Applicants: Many students apply to multiple top-tier universities, and these universities are aware of the competition for the most highly sought-after students. Admissions officers may consider where else an applicant has applied or been accepted, though decisions are ultimately made independently.
3. Reciprocal Policies: Some universities may have reciprocal agreements or understandings regarding the transfer of students or collaborative programs. This could extend to things like credit transfers, joint research initiatives, or other academic collaborations.
4. Informal Networks: Admissions officers, faculty, and administrators at top universities often have professional networks and may share information or insights about applicants or trends in higher education.
However, it's important to note that formal collusion or agreements to manipulate admissions would be illegal and unethical. Universities are expected to uphold the integrity of their admissions processes and treat each applicant fairly and independently. Any evidence of collusion or unfair practices would likely be met with severe consequences.

The research article in question is based on a study conducted by Oh Joo KweonID, Yong Kwan Lim, Mi-Kyung Lee, and Hye Ryoun Kim at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Chung-Ang University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea. It is titled "Red and white blood cell morphology characterization and hands-on time analysis by the digital cell imaging analyzer DI-60."
Relevant answer
Answer
Investigations were conducted into the clinical performance of DI-60 in RBC, WBC, and hands-on time analysis. Following CLSI H20-A2, two (2) medical technologists conducted differential counts via PBS and examined the blood smear under a light microscope for the manual slide review.
The accuracy assessment of the RBC morphology determined by DI-60 in comparison to the manual PBS review and the assessment of the repeatability and within laboratory precision of the percentage values generated from DI-60 for the RBC morphology of PBSs from 20 abnormal samples were included in the performance evaluation of RBC analysis. The mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, red cell distribution width, and mean corpuscular volume from XN-20 were compared with those from DI-60 to examine the parameters of RBCs with hypochromasia, anisocytosis, microcytosis, and macrocytosis—rather than using manual slide review.
Performance evaluation for WBC analysis included comparing WBC and non-WBC differential counts between pre-classification by DI-60 and after-user verification, analyzing the association between verified DI-60 WBC differential counts and manual differential counts, evaluating the agreement between DI-60 results and the flags generated from the hematology analyzer (XN-20) for abnormal cell identification, and assessing the precision of recognizing abnormal cells and blasts between DI-60 and manual review.

A corporate university is an internal educational institution established by a company to train its employees in specific skills related to their work. These universities usually offer personalized training programs adapted to the needs of the company. Democracy can be considered the nemesis of this model because in a democratic structure, power is distributed more equitably and decisions are made collectively, which could conflict with the hierarchical structure and centralized control that characterizes many corporate universities. Furthermore, democracy encourages diversity of opinion and approach, which could challenge the homogeneity of thought that some companies seek to promote through their internal training programs.

You seem to be a passionate defender of this publisher and make no mistake you are entitled to. ‘Accusing’ me of spreading misinformation is however too strongly put. All I did was giving a factual summary. The thing is, as I indicated:
-They ARE mentioned in the Beall’s list. Since numerous versions of this list are spread across the web all over the place, people searching for CSP and predatory will find their inclusion in the list.
-Your statement that predatory only refers to journals is not entirely true. There are predatory journals (and predatory publishers publishing journals) but there are predatory conferences and predatory book publishers as well, see for example https://libguides.tcd.ie/schol-comm/predatory-publishers
-Jeffrey Beall was not extremely consistent when it comes to publishers that transferred their focus to book publishing. See for example InTech Open where he states, and I quote “InTechOpen now only publishes books. They are still considered to be predatory.”
-The mentioning of a link referring to issues in 2017 was not intended to provide arguments for the current situation but simply an explanation for how they ended up in the Beall’s list (I added a comment on this in my previous reply)
You are absolutely right by stating that the publisher should not be included (anymore) in the Beall’s list. Since the list is/was exclusively focused on open access journals (which was/is a biased approach and one of the points of criticism at the time the list started). Unfortunately already at the time when Jeffrey Beall was behind his list it was clear that he was primarily focused on adding journals and publishers on his list and was extremely reluctant in removing one.
Unfortunately, they are listed, and a lot of people wrongfully use a list like the Beall’s list as “the absolute truth”. Therefor I wanted to point out that they (CSP) are mentioned. Personally, I use the list merely as an indication to look further and make my own ‘judgement’ (based on way more than just the mentioning in a list).
It is a good sign that there are people like you that vouch for them (and a good number of replies mention positive experiences). Let us agree to disagree about the reputation of this publisher and let people make their own estimate on whether they want to get involved with this publisher or not.
Best regards.

Identify existing studies that have developed scales or measurement tools to assess these constructs. Look for articles in academic journals, books, and research databases that focus on psychology, sociology, education, or related fields.
  2. Existing Scales: Once you've identified relevant literature, examine the methodologies and measurement instruments used in previous studies. Some researchers may have developed and validated scales to measure peer influence or peer pressure among university students. Check the appendices or supplementary materials of these studies for details on the scales used.
  3. Adaptation or Modification: If you find an existing scale that aligns with your research objectives and context, consider adapting or modifying it to suit your specific needs. Ensure that any modifications maintain the validity and reliability of the scale. You may need to seek permission from the original authors and conduct pilot testing to validate the adapted scale.
  4. Consultation and Expert Input: Seek input from experts in psychology, sociology, or measurement theory to guide the development or adaptation of your scale. Consult with faculty members, advisors, or researchers who have expertise in the area of peer influence or peer pressure to ensure the validity and reliability of your measurement instrument.
  5. Pilot Testing and Validation: Once you've developed or adapted a scale, conduct pilot testing with a sample of university students to assess its reliability, validity, and appropriateness. Use statistical techniques such as factor analysis, reliability analysis, and criterion-related validity to evaluate the psychometric properties of the scale.
  6. Ethical Considerations: Ensure that your research complies with ethical guidelines and principles, particularly regarding informed consent, confidentiality, and participant rights. Obtain approval from your university's Institutional Review Board (IRB) or ethics committee before administering the scale to participants.

I completed my PhD last year and am currently not affiliated with or employed by a university. I continue to utilize my previous affiliation for manuscripts resulting from the projects I undertook during my PhD. However, I am involved in other collaborative projects. I am curious about the possibility of obtaining an honorary status from a university or research institute for the purpose of publication, allowing me to use their affiliation until I secure a post-doc or research position in a university or institution. Is this feasible?
Relevant answer
Answer
Securing an honorary affiliation for post-PhD publications is possible in some cases, but it ultimately depends on the policies and guidelines of the institution or organization you are seeking affiliation with. Here are some points to consider:
  1. Benefits of Honorary Affiliation: Honorary affiliation can provide credibility and recognition for your research work, especially if you are not currently affiliated with a formal institution. It can also help in building professional networks and collaborations.
  2. Considerations for Honorary Affiliation:Research Collaboration: Institutions may be more willing to provide honorary affiliation if you are collaborating on research projects with their faculty members or researchers. Publication Contribution: If your post-PhD publications are significant and contribute to the field, institutions may consider offering honorary affiliation. Professional Standing: Your professional standing, experience, and expertise in the field may also play a role in securing honorary affiliation.
  3. Approaching Institutions:Contacting the Institution: Reach out to the institution or department where you wish to seek honorary affiliation. Explain your research interests, publications, and how your work aligns with their research focus. Proposal: Provide a proposal outlining the benefits of honorary affiliation for both parties, such as potential collaborations, knowledge exchange, and research impact.
  4. Negotiating Terms:Publication Acknowledgment: Institutions may require acknowledgment of their affiliation in your publications. Duration: Clarify the duration of the honorary affiliation and any specific terms or conditions associated with it. Expectations: Understand the expectations from both parties regarding research involvement, contributions, and use of institutional resources.
  5. Alternative Options:Research Networks: Joining research networks, associations, or societies related to your field can also provide opportunities for collaboration and recognition. Collaborative Research Centers: Consider collaborating with research centers or institutes that offer opportunities for affiliated researchers.
It's important to approach institutions with a clear proposal and demonstrate the value of your research contributions. While securing honorary affiliation may not always be guaranteed, it is worth exploring as it can enhance your research profile and opportunities for collaboration.

Dear Friends, Grand Success. The 131st finding in my TOU (Theory of Universality) is : that protons are space-waves just like electrons, and taking the speed of protons in the space to be (1/43) of electron speed and applying exactly the same logic as applied for electron, the mass of the proton works out to be : (- i) 1.63193 x 10^-27 kg, ( the electron mass was derived earlier as (+i) 9.11941635 x 10^-31 kg ); which agrees with the experimental results. The (i) factor shows that all mass moving at speeds greater than or less than the speed of space is imaginary. That is only space can have realistic mass. Incidentally, the speed of the space is same as the speed of light at that space-time. To be published in next Annexure.

1. The amount of money is very limited. The stakes are so low. A lot of academic hours are put into writing grants and many times they go nowhere.
2. You are always trying to be known. This competition leads to toxic relationships.
3. Academics are compared using metrics. Then people are valued as if they were numbers, rankings. The value as a person is put aside. This promotes toxic behavior among researchers, because to increase their ranking, many researchers start doing unethical things, such as threatening someone. The university system doesn't stop toxic behavior. It rewards it and creates a cycle of toxicity within its own system.
4. The toxic culture goes from the very top. There is always the requirement to have more papers, bring more money to the university, always more!!!
5. Many things are best left to luck. A low ranking does not mean that you have not worked hard.
6. Is it fair for one professor to be the official supervisor of more than 50 students at a time? This is a joke!
7. You can get sick from this toxicity and not see what is wrong anymore.

As part of the project we are currently working on, "Social and Motivation Effects of Virtual Reality in Distance Education," we are looking for a reliable data source for a database of distance education (fully online, not blended) in Europe.
We are specifically looking for databases from reliable sources of individual EU countries (e.g., from the Ministry of Education), providing data on universities offering distance education (university name; name of the study program/field; type of study like bachelor's, master's, doctoral; language of instruction; duration of study, etc.
We would be very grateful for any provided source or advice.

I would recommend to check EADTU. It is a network of European universities that are involved in open and distance education. While it may not provide a database of distance education programs across Europe, it could offer insights, reports, or links to relevant resources that might be helpful for your research.
While I did a quick search on EADTU, I found this link https://eadtu.eu/index.php/members through their sitemap. Hope you can get some data from there.
Also this website in particular you can get filtered data depends on the fields, level etc.

Dear All,
I am working on a university project where I am converting a fuel-operated ferry that runs between Tahiti and Moorea. The initial phase of my project involves determining the energy required for a round-trip journey under the current fuel-based parameters of the ferry.
To calculate this, I have considered factors such as resistance to forward movement caused by the wet surface, wind resistance, etc. The ferry has a capacity of 1,150 tons, and the total distance for the round trip is approximately 50 km. Additionally, I factored in varying speeds experienced in port and at sea (max 20 kts).
Based on these considerations, I have calculated an estimated energy requirement of 16 MWh for the round trip. However, I am unsure if this figure is accurate or realistic.
I would greatly appreciate any insights or feedback on whether this energy estimation seems correct.

I kindly notify that ResearchGate must consider the difference among the author's first names written only with one capital letter. It is obvious that published articles labeled only with surnames, are very confusing about differentiating their authors. Because of that the SCI is inevitable for scientific platform, a new approach is needed to label the articles also with the first names.
Technical scientist: SELÇUK SOYUPAK, Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, KTO Karatay University, Konya,Türkiye
Medical scientist: SÜREYYA SOYUPAK, Çukurova University, Medical School, Department of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Adana, Türkiye
Relevant answer
Answer
It is an insufficient way to label any published article with a surname only because:
1. A surname is a generic name, including other names allows for specificity, and;
2. A lone use of a surname may be misleading.

RE: "nationalism(nation first), localism(locality first) and universalism(all first, top down ethics)"
Shouldn't the and be an or? They can't all be first priorities together. Localism can preclude nationalism which in turn can preclude universalism. Localism and nationalism can foster inhumanity against outsiders, so it seems odd to say that they prioritize humanity, unless the outsiders are regarded as not fully human, which was one of the sins of colonialism.

How does the cooperation of colleges and universities with commercially functioning economic entities, including companies and businesses, contribute to increasing innovation in the economy?
Colleges and universities, as part of their teaching and research activities, research work carried out, adaptation of curricula to the changing realities of the modern economy, support for students in terms of cooperation with potential employers, institutions that may be the subject of written theses, support for the development of innovative startups founded by students, performance of research and analytical commissioned work, establishment of cooperation clusters, development of reports on the development of selected spheres, branches, problems of the modern economy, civilization, etc., undertake cooperation with various economic entities and public institutions. Such developed cooperation between universities and other entities, enterprises, companies, financial institutions and public institutions, cultural institutions, etc., can significantly contribute to increasing innovation in the economy. A key issue is to involve students in the development of such cooperation. Improving the aforementioned cooperation can and should result in better adaptation of the research work carried out at universities to the increasingly rapidly changing trends in the economy. The implementation of new ICT, Internet and Industry 4.0/5.0 information technologies, including generative artificial intelligence technology into universities should foster the development of such cooperation.
In view of the above, I address the following question to the esteemed community of scientists and researchers:
How does the cooperation of colleges and universities with commercially functioning economic entities, including companies and enterprises, contribute to increasing innovation in the economy?
How does the cooperation of universities with business entities contribute to increasing innovation in the economy?
And what is your opinion about it?
What is your opinion on this issue?
Please answer,
I invite everyone to join the discussion,
Thank you very much,
Best wishes,

It is hard to discriminate between academic research and applied research. In fact any applied research roots from the academic. The main problem faced by researchers are specifically in social science and management by using qualitative approach is associated with articulation of the findings. This can be reduced by certain degree when you take assistance of linguistic professionals.

Hello everyone, may I ask who has used the paid remote delivery service for academic dissertations from university libraries in the United States? If so, will you transfer the funds to the other party's corporate account after receiving the necessary documents? I recently contacted the University of Hawaii Library to obtain a graduation thesis. After receiving the literature, the other party sent me an email stating that payment was required. The email only provided the account name but did not include the name of the remitting bank. I called the other party to request detailed account information, but they sent me the original email again. I went to the bank to inquire, but it was not resolved. May I ask if there is any solution?
Relevant answer
Answer
In UK, if I transfer money to another UK person I do not need bank name, only Sort Code and Account Number.. Withthat information our system 'knows'. Try asking chatgopt that is AI system, and it is free. Good luck

I have a master's degree in clinical psychology and wrote many articles on positive psychology. I am looking for a position at the university for a Ph.D.
It's a pleasure to me to help to get a position.
Relevant answer
Answer
Of course the University of Pennsylvania is the headquarters for Positive Psychology. If you want to pursue a related topic, that you could probably work on in any Psychology program, you could look at how giving promotes dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin levels. There's a reference on the bottom of this response.
Before I knew about this research, I had an unsatisfying experience with buying gifts for kids, especially when I heard that parents sometimes sold the gifts for cash and the kids received nothing. I started handing out $20 to five people at Christmas who could use a boost. Then I wrote two books, A Pocketful of $20s and Three Worries, in which the protagonist shares many ways to brighten someone’s day with a $20 gift at Christmas. Also included are ways to make the receiver feel recognized and valued and never less than.
Here's one story. On our way back from a long trip, we pulled into McDonalds. The woman at the window was particularly nice. I gave her a $20 and told her to keep the change from the bill. She was flustered and not sure what to do with the money. I told her to put the change in her pocket. She leaned closer to the window and told me her children were too young to do anything for her on this Mother’s Day so the $12.75 change would be her Mother’s Day present.
This topic could certainly use more research and is a developing field.

I am working on the biography of Maria Salomea Skłodowska (Marie Curie). I am confused about her Bachelor/Master degrees. Many authors mentioned that she obtained Master Degree on Physics (1893) and on Mathematics (?) or Chemistry (1894) from Sorbonne (Paris) but I am not getting any information about her Bachelor Degree. She completed education in a gymnasium (school level) in Warsaw. But could not study in Warsaw University because during that time woman was not allowed to study there.
The question is: whether without Bachelor Degree was she able to study Master or not? In this connection it would be nice if anybody can help me to give me the following information:
Names of the Degrees (Bachelor/Master/Doctoral Levels) with Years & Institutions — Marie Curie obtained from Warsaw and Paris (School/College/University).
Relevant answer
Answer
Thanks Forhad for sending the document. However, please note that she passed two examinations, viz. LICENCE ÈS SCIENCES PHYSIQUES AND LICENCE ÈS MATHÉMATIQUE . I am confused whether each of this degree (LICENCE ÈS SCIENCES or LICENCE ÈS MATHÉMATIQUE) is equivalent to Bachelor of Science or Master of Science. I consulted many documents but unable to find consensus view. Many authors have mentioned this as Bachelor of Science, others as Master of Science. I sent few mails to the experts on this issue and expecting reply from them.
Thank you once again for your cooperation.
With best wishes

Hi Dragan,
Probably the best and easiest thing to do would be to involve colleagues from Foro Italico and work on those data with them... For sure Giuseppe and Yuri would be more than happy to continue the collaboration with you about data collected together :)
